Candace Twyman of the BBB Foundation informed us of the latest scams of 2010. We wish the world was always a safe place....but there are many people out there who's main goal is to separate you from your money. Please review the attachments to learn how not to become a victim.
We journey back in time during WWII when the Allies had no place to put the hundreds of thousands of German soldiers surrendering to Allied Forces. Small towns across the United States were chosen to host POW camps. One such camp was located about 100 miles northwest of Houston in Hearne, Texas. Learn about the history and life at these camps here.
Ann Marie McDonald, Outreach Coordinator for the Houston & Southwest Texas Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association gave us a great talk on January 24th. There was discussion on the 10 Signs of Alzheimer's, 5 Ways to Maintain Your Brain, Resources for Families and Driving Warning Signs. Ms. McDonald will continue the discussion on Monday, March 28th at 10:00 - so mark your calendars.
Claire Gunnels and Dorrie Scott gave us great information about the Lone Star College-CyFair / Harris County Library. This library is a great resource for this area. All of the librarians are very helpful....so feel free to talk to any of them. Check out the following attachments for info on things we discussed.
The Spring Open House and Registration at LSC-CyFair will be on Saturday, January 22, 2011 from 10:00-12:00 in Conference Center Room 151. Please join us for the fun and turn in your class registration form. Following are the files pertaining to the Spring 2011 Semester. You can save the files on your computer for future reference and print at your convenience. Please complete as much of the Registration Form as you can before you come to the Open House....that will allow you to to enjoy the fun and friendship. Be sure to enter the Registration # and Class Name for each classes you would like to attend. There are four classes that have materials fees.....for these classes you need to enter them on your form AND stand in line to enroll and pay the necessary fee. Please bring your ID Card so you can get the new Spring 2011 sticker for your card.
Did you know that several ALL members are getting together for a cruise through the Panama Canal? There are still open slots if you would like to join the cruise. Cruise Dates are April 13 - 17th. The cruise on Holland American cruise line starts in San Diego and goes all the way around through the Panama Canal and ends in Ft. Lauderdale. Prices range from $1,099 to $1,999. Cruisers will receive $100 per cabin onboard spending money, a private cocktail reception, and a private class on Life In Panama taught by ALL members Mabeth and Ken Coleman. Sitting is harder on your back than standing. Poor posture can lead to poor health. Dr. Sammy Tao showed the class the proper posture for sitting. Because we are all different, your chair needs to fit your body. Step one is to select the proper chair. Then you should select a table that is the proper height for the chair. The computer screen should be positioned directly in front of you....not too high or too low. Review the handout for additional information on proper posture.
Carol Knepp led a great class on container gardening. This type of gardening can give you instant gratification. In just a few hours you can fill a container with your favorite flowers or vegetables and bring life and color to a dreary space. To be a successful "container gardener" all you need to do is to gather a variety of containers that you like and add plants of your choice. Container gardens are easier to maintain than traditional gardens and can add beauty to your home patio, deck, porch, etc. Review the attached handout for more details on how to get started and maintain a container garden.
In our imaginations Sherlock Holmes seems real. But he is actually a fictional character created by writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock's keen observations always led him to solve the crime. One of his best and most well-known stories is The Hound of the Baskervilles. Attached is a copy of the story that you may want to read before the next class meeting on Tuesday, November 23rd at 1:30. We will see the movie and then discuss how this sleuth solved the story. Note that this is a long movie....so the class may run long.
As "seniors" we remember our ABCs.....but do we remember those math formulas from 40 years ago? Associate Professor Kim Lane showed us some basic math that we may have forgotten. If you use math in fun ways, you are more likely to remember the process. Read the attached pages to see how working through some fun problems may help fire those sleeping synapses. What better way to relearn Algebra than figuring out which is the best pizza deal.
