Advisory Committee Minutes - August 2011

Even though we have 100+ degree weather, the Fall Semester will soon be here. Staff at LSC-CyFair is in the process of moving offices to the new buildings. The ALL Fall 2011 Registration is still on the calendar for Saturday, September 10th from 9:30-12:00. As before, it will be held in the Conference Center. Be sure to mark you calendar ! If you are not able to attend on Sept 10th, don't fret....you can drop by the campus registration area any time after that date. The Fall Class Schedule and other information is on the college website.

Advisory Committee Minutes - July 2011

Hope you said "goodbye" to our old Mod 2 classroom because it is being dismantled. In the Fall Semester our new classroom location will be HSC 106. This is the room "next to the kitchen" in the Health Science Building. The closest parking will be in the North Parking Lot near the short wrought iron fence surrounding the kid's playground. Enter the side door of the building and the room is just a couple of doors down. This is much closer to the parking lot than our old room....so let's say "thanks" to the administration for making our walk shorter.

We plan on having a "make-up" class for the Records Class that was cancelled on June 30th. Mark your calendar to meet in the Kitchen (HSC 105) from 1:30-3:30, Tuesday afternoon August 16th. We will use this class to learn how to turn old record albums into cute bowls and platters that we plan to use for our Fall Fling party.

Maximized Living through Chiropractic

Mick Mahan, D.C. gave us insight on how our body is the best healer of our aches and pains and many illnesses normally addressed by medical doctors. The human body has the remarkable power to heal itself as long as the nervous system is balanced and "talking" with nerves that lead to the organs. The body suffers whenever there is inappropriate pressure on nerves. Dr. Mahan, Discover Chiropractic, told us how to "maximize our lives" by following 5 Essentials.
1. Maximized Mind - You must have the right mindset to stick with quality health and fitness programs.
2. Maximized Nerve Supply - It is important to correct misalignments in the spine to optimize nerve function, health and healing.
3. Maximized Nutrition - Nutrition is key to good health. Food is the fuel that our body needs to function....and that fuel needs to be quality food.
4. Maximized Movement - Our bodies are meant to move and it is vital for cardiovascular health.
5. Minimized Toxins - Toxins come at us from many sources.....it is important to avoid toxins when able and to remove toxins that can't be avoided.

Introduction to Scrapbooking

Harriet Konrad shared her love of scrapbooking with the ALL class. If you haven't gotten involved in this fun hobby now may be the time. Scrapbooking is a method for preserving personal and family history in an organized form such as decorated albums. We all have great intentions of getting things organized and think that we will remember dates, places and faces....but we are human and things are soon forgotten. So if you have a drawer full of pictures, pull them out and do something with them. Review the attachment and get started. We hope to have an organized group of scrapbookers in the future.

Music of Puerto Rico

Elsie Alers Markuson presented a great class showing us the wide variety of music that emanates from Puerto Rico. Ricky Martin and Marc Anthony are Salsa singers commonly associated with Puerto Rico. There is also Jazz from Tito Puente and Nestor Torres. Another well known musician is Jose Feliciano who is famous for playing the Cuatro guitar. Then there is the Danza - a very sophisticated form of music that can be extremely varied in its expression. It has a more sedate rhythm dance with slower movements. Danzas can be either romantic or festive. Elsie played recordings by Danza composer and orchestra leader Rafael Alers.....evidently a distant family relative. The highlight of the class was when Lorraine Torres Greaux sang several songs for the class. Lorraine is a young Puerto Rican who now lives in Texas. Her lovely voice is showcased on her CD titled Boricua por dentro y por fuera.

Harp Recital with Emily Mitchell

We had a wonderful Harp Recital and discussion with premier harpist Emily Mitchell. Ms.Mitchell has played internationally at some of the world's most well-known venues. She has also been lauded by major newspapers and has preformed on several TV programs. Ms. Mitchell will serve as chairman of the upcoming Harp Society's 2012, 50th Anniversary Conference in New York City. Advisory Committee Minutes - June 2011

Summer Classes have been going well......join us for the remaining classes. The Summer Schedule is posted on both the college website and on the top right of this blog. The Fall semester will find us in a new room location - we will let you know as soon as we have confirmation of the new room number.

Fall will be chaotic as they open the new buildings and shift classes around for a large influx of students. If you would like to assist with Student Registration in the Fall, please let Cheryl know and she will get you scheduled.

Scuba Diving opens up a totally different world. David Perkins shared his story of learning to scuba dive and places he has been. If you enjoy water, travel, excitement and seeing new things, perhaps you should also try scuba. There were lots of "seniors" in the pictures he showed.
