Advisory Board Minutes - March 2013

The Advisory Board met on Wednesday morning, March 20th.  Reports were made and are available using the link below.  Bus Trips and classes have been well attended this semester.  We are still planning things for the Fall Semester.  There will be no classes during the summer. However, we are making arrangements for the games groups to continue....probably on different week days.  Once the decision on play dates is made, we will advise via the blog.  Remember to check the blog daily to view updates.

Pillowcase Dresses for Little Girls

Don't you just love to see little girls in cute dresses.  Louise Ruggard showed us how to make easy little dresses using either pillowcases or remnants.  Her church makes the dresses for charity where they are really appreciated and loved by little girls around the world.  You can also make dresses for the special little girls in your family.....grandmas really like to dress up their granddaughters.  Louise showed us examples of the dresses and gave us hints for making them easily.  Attached is a pattern that was developed for making the dresses for charity.  Let you imagination lead you to new ideas.  This is a wonderful use of fabric you have stashed away in a drawer.  For a little investment of time and money you can delight many little girls with your creations.

Houston Deco Preservation

Jim Parsons and David Bush presented a wonderful program highlighting the Art Deco architecture that still remains in Houston.  We go by it everyday on the street, but do we ever really look at it and appreciate it as a distinctive art form?  Art Deco combines distinct geometric shapes, intense colors and a decorative look.  We are lucky that Preservation Houston devotes time to highlight and save this part of our history.  Jim and David recently published a book titled Houston Deco.  Pick up a copy your home.

Flower Arranging

Everyone loves flowers !!   Why not enjoy them in your home more often.  Peggy Meeker led a class on Flower Arranging for the ALL Academy for Lifelong Learning group on March 6th.  If you missed it, just imaging a room filled with people and almost thirty bunches of flowers.  Each person got to pick a bundle and then Peggy and her helpers, Cheryl Sanchez and Jan Doing illustrated arranging techniques.  It was a wonderful class....especially since each class member got to take home her personally arranged bouquet.  To learn some of Peggy's tips, review her handout.
