Farewell to Our Food Services Friends

Some of you may have heard that the college has selected a new food service vendor. The Lakeside Cafe and Cyber Cafe are closed effective Thursday, June 23rd at 1.30 pm to begin renovations. The opening date is TBD.

The ALL community would like to express its appreciation to the Food Services team. Many of us have known the team many years and they have always put smiles on our faces every time we stopped in. Please come out and say goodbye on June 30th if you can.

Invitation from Prof. Buck Buchanan

"I wanted to invite you all to the Belize Gallery Exhibition, "At Water's Edge", and Reception of student work. Community involvement is very important to me and I value your input and participation. I am exceptionally proud of the quality of work and thoughtful effort put in by those who took the time to participate." - Buck Buchanan

Gallery Reception: Thursday, June 23rd from 11.30am-1.30pm in ART 101
Exhibition Ends: Thursday, July 7th

The Gallery Reception is an open event, please bring family and friends. The reception will include a video presentation at 12.30pm; a reflective "look back" on the study abroad experiences through the lens of Buck's camera.

Silent Auction: There will be a silent auction held during the course of the Gallery exhibit - funds raised will be used to help a local Mayan-Belizean student obtain a Belize rain forest guide license (approximately $1000 USD). This is a rigorous program and provides an opportunity to make a good living wage for life - a worthy outcome for some of the hardest working people I've every met.

Genealogy Workshop - April 8

Today was our last class in the 8 sessions with Michelle Christi. We certainly enjoyed learning tips and techniques about genealogical research. I believe that everyone was able to find one or more links in their personal research. Today's class was about how to research business and employment records to find family connections. Michelle also compiled a listing of "old" job descriptions that will help you understand what your ancestor did as a living....you will be amused at the jobs listed.

Several class members asked for a sheet gathering all of the websites that Michelle has mentioned. I created a one page Word document that you can download and click on each website. To view and download - click here.

Genealogy Workshop - April 1st

Michelle Christie was a real "trooper" for the April 1st class. She wasn't feeling well for several days prior to the class.  However she really wanted to make sure that students had the best website sources to research immigration of ancestors.  Check out the websites shown in the following PowerPoint presentation.  Immigration PowerPoint - click here

Mistakes Were Made

Sharon DuBose gave a fun class on grammar to us old timers. The presentation reminded us of being back in school and identified some of the little things we see in today's marketing that just drive us crazy.

Valuable Treasures in the Attic

We all have various papers in our homes that have sentimental or even monetary value. Jonathan Topper shared with us how to identify any valuable documents we may have and how we go about getting them appraised and sold, if desired.

Austin's First Colony: The Old 300

We learned more Texas history from Monte Parks, from Jesse H. Jones Park. He told the story of Moses and Stephen F. Austin as they made deals with the Spanish and Mexican governments so that they could bring colonists to the place known today as Texas. There were many trials and tribulations as the settlers tried to carve out their place in history; now known as the Old 300.

Baked Coconut Shrimp

Lou Master gave another cooking class for us. He prepared Baked Coconut Shrimp served with Orange Marmalade making a delicious combination. Sue Master, his wife, provided a dessert sample to accompany the shrimp. It was a delicious "Sock it to Me" cake. ALL members Donna Smith and Sue Pitre helped prepare the shrimp.
