It's a Puzzle

What a fun class with Brian Taranto. He did the hard part of cutting out our puzzles, but we put together and painted some beautiful puzzle animals. You can look at some of our work below:

Marching Home - Guest Speaker Dr. Brian Jordan

Dr.

Dr. Jordan has a doctorate in history from Yale University and began his college career at Gettysburg College. On Wednesday, April 24 at 7pm, he will be discussing his book, “Marching Home — Union Veterans and Their Unending Civil War”, a ground-breaking investigation which examines the fate of Union veterans who won the war but 
couldn't bear the peace. Although he is discussing Civil War veterans, his topic is relevant today and covers the struggles that veterans face as they readjust to home.

Wine Tasting at Kroger

The class at our neighborhood Kroger was lots of fun. We learned from Denise Casto, wine manager, what the best selling products are in her department. Some of them were a real surprise to many of us; wine cocktails made with agave wine/nectar? We had some great cheeses to snack on provided by Kroger's cheese manager. We all learned something new in this class.

Building with Cardboard

Jay Gavitt from the Cypress Historical Society spent a couple of classes with us showing how we can re-use/re-purpose everyday items to make buildings. The class was very educational and creative. Jay shared some information about the history of the Cypress area as he showed us some of the historical structures he made.

Earth Day Presentation

LSC-CF Center for Geosciences & Department of Geography invites ALL to a special event:

In conjunction with Earth Day, LSC-CF Center for Geosciences is hosting a film screening of "Chasing Coral" - an award winning film that explores environmental changes in our tropical oceans. Following the film will be a discussion led by Kelly Drinnen of NOAA. Kelly is an education and outreach specialist for the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary and she will tell us about Texas' very own coral reef in the Gulf of Mexico.

Visiting Ireland on a Rick Steves Tour

Mike Hilgart shared his travels with Rick Steves' Heart of Ireland Tour. He and Sharon took an eight day tour and saw many sights between Dublin and the Dingle Peninsula. His experience with the tour was very positive and they had excellent tour guides, nice accommodations and plenty of local extras planned by the Rick Steves group.

Balloon Twisting, Too!

Another fun day learning how to pop balloons, uh, I mean make balloon things. From fishing poles with our catch, to doggies, to tulips and more. Melo Pisha had lots of ideas and we tried many of them.

Melo suggests using quality latex balloons, typical size 260 (2"x60") for twisting. Examples here.
In a pinch, Party City will do. And, do not forget a pump... trust me!

Short-Cut Cooking

There was some good eating in the kitchen today. Missy Dixon, LSC-CyFair librarian, shared her experiences and recipes using an Air Fryer and Instant Pots. Class members also shared their own experiences using these cookers. Lots of good information. We had beef stew, jicama fries, chocolate fudge (a little lagniappe that had nothing to do with the cookers), and an apple and cranberry sauce served over pound cake.

State Birds of the USA

Wild Birds Unlimited was back with some more great information about all things birding. This time we discussed the official state birds, what they are and what they should have been. Lots of interesting tidbits thrown in.
