Make a Turkey

In another of Gene Chism's woodworking classes, Gene led us through the making of a turkey to decorate our Thanksgiving tables or for a fall arrangement.

Building with Cardboard

Jay Gavitt, Cypress Historical Society, showed us some beautiful examples of Cypress historic buildings he made as well as how to construct them ourselves. Using cardboard, scissors and glue, it is amazing what can be made using your imagination.

How about making something purrfect for Halloween? Linda Gabrielson and her students had a great time making their Folk Art Cat Yard Stakes.

Dangerous Animals / Animal Cruelty

Harris County Asst. Attorney Mack McInnis talked with our class about the various aspects of dangerous animals and animal cruelty. We learned about the legal codes that apply and how the system works.

Memory and the Great War

We have been invited to another talk discussing WWI by the History and Government departments. Memory and the Great War: How the United States and Europe Commemorate the First World War will be presented by Prof. Sophia Mrouri and Prof. Kelly Phillips. They will focus on the Battle of Verdun and discuss how differently European nations and the United States remember the Great War.

The talk will be held in CENT 151 on Wednesday, Sept 28 from 1.30-3.00pm.

Texas Top 20 Birds

Richard Edie of Wild Birds Unlimited presented another great class on birds that we see in our travels throughout Texas. We learned some interesting stories about these birds and how to attract them to our own backyards.

Food Safety for Seniors

Janet Lane, ALL member and Registered Sanitarian, shares with us how we are susceptible to food-borne diseases as we age, especially if we have chronic conditions. We learned tips on how to shop, prepare and store food for maximum safety. We also learned what to look for when dining out.

Road Trippin' to Taos

Brett Hall, a local artist, took us on a journey to the Taos Pueblos inhabited by the Red Willow people. Brett shared his passion for art and the people of the Taos area. He showed us that it's not just the destination, but the journey. Stay off the interstate, enjoy the journey and stop along the way. There is always something new to discover.

Reader's Theatre Production - Freud's Last Session

Dean Matt Turner has invited ALL to the performances next week of Freud's Last Session by Mark St. Germain. The play centers on legendary psychoanalyst Dr. Sigmund Freud who invites the young, rising Oxford Don C.S. Lewis to his home in London. On the day England enters WW II, Freud and Lewis clash about love, sex, the existence of God, and the meaning of life. Freud's Last Session is a deeply touching play filled with humor and the exploring minds, hearts and souls of two brilliant men addressing the greatest questions of all time.

There will be two performances; Monday, Sept 19th and Tuesday, Sept 20th, from 3.30-5.30 pm in ART 102. Each performance will be followed by a discussion with the audience.
