Elsie Alers Markuson presented a great class showing us the wide variety of music that emanates from Puerto Rico. Ricky Martin and Marc Anthony are Salsa singers commonly associated with Puerto Rico. There is also Jazz from Tito Puente and Nestor Torres. Another well known musician is Jose Feliciano who is famous for playing the Cuatro guitar. Then there is the Danza - a very sophisticated form of music that can be extremely varied in its expression. It has a more sedate rhythm dance with slower movements. Danzas can be either romantic or festive. Elsie played recordings by Danza composer and orchestra leader Rafael Alers.....evidently a distant family relative. The highlight of the class was when Lorraine Torres Greaux sang several songs for the class. Lorraine is a young Puerto Rican who now lives in Texas.
